If These Walls Could Talk

Do you ever wonder who or what has come before you when you are in a certain place? Sometimes, I think about what this very dorm room has seen. These four walls have probably seen roommates get along and be best friends, roommates fight, roommates simply coexisting, and everything in between. Now that I'm moving out within the next few days, I recently realized that I am adding to the long history that this room has seen.

It has seen me and my roommate meet for the first time. It has seen us unpack all of our stuff with our families by our sides. It has seen us sleepless in the first few nights here. It has seen us slowly get to know each other, slowly become friends, slowly get used to this experience we call "college." Now it is seeing us get ready to move out, pack up, and move forward into the next year of college.

This very room has seen these very stages played out before it by countless others. If these walls could talk, I'm sure it would have some very interesting stories to tell. And now our story has been added to this history.

It is kind of odd to think about how this time last year, there were different girls living in this room with different circumstances, etc. This time next year, there will also be different girls inhabiting this very space, walking the same floors I've walked, sitting at my current desk, and opening our shades to let in the afternoon sun.

I almost wish that I could leave these future roommates a note. I would ask them first to take care of the room. Then, I would tell them how important it is to respect each other, to listen more than you speak, to get to know your roommate as best as you can. I would tell them to be fearless, to see everyone as a potential friend. Most of all, I would tell them to enjoy their freshman year, because it goes by faster than the speed of light.

Thanks for reading.
