A Letter to Maya Angelou, May You Rest in Peace

Yesterday, the world lost a legend. The world lost a poet, a writer, an actress, a teacher, and a friend. The world lost you, Maya, and we are heartbroken. You taught us how to have courage, how to love, how to grow, and how to live. You have inspired us with your words and with your actions. You inspired all women to be fearless, powerful women, and you taught this not only with your words, but most importantly with your actions. You have accomplished more in your 86 years than most could ever dream of accomplishing in a thousand lifetimes.

As a woman who aspires to be a journalist, your way with words has served as a model of what writing should be: effortless, poised, thought-provoking, beautiful. Your elegance and class was and continues to be a picture of perfection for all girls and women to strive to achieve.

To say that you will be missed is an understatement. Your passing has left a void in the heart of the world that could only be filled with you. There is and never will be another soul on this Earth like you, neither in my lifetime nor in generations to come.

Thank you, Maya. Thank you for your life and the way you lived it. Thank you for your words of wisdom that will echo in our hearts forever. Thank you, Maya, for the gift of yourself.

Yesterday, the world lost a legend. Yesterday, God gained an angel. May you rest in peace.

Love,
Me and the Rest of the World
