First, anticipate quite a lot of ice breakers. And I mean A LOT of ice breakers. If you don't know what an ice breaker is, I can assure you that it is not literally breaking ice. Instead, they are games to help you relax and get to know your fellow classmates. Playing a few of these games can be fun, amusing, and sometimes interesting. But after about three or four of them, you will have had your fill of ice breakers. Be prepared to just put on happy face and participate in these ice breakers, even though we all know that they can get very annoying very quickly.
Next, be ready to discuss your major, if you have one. During my orientation, students met with the department chairs of their majors in order to find our what classes students in that major should register for. Before you go on your orientation, be sure to look up some of the classes (if you can) that are in your major, so if you have any questions on them, you can ask during such a time.
In my orientation, we also registered for classes. Again, try to at least have an idea of what classes you want to take before you sit down to register for your classes. Make a list to bring with your during your registration time, and be sure to add required courses to the list, if you are not already enrolled in some of your required courses. Also, add some backup classes to the list, just in case the courses you wish to take are full or are unavailable for freshmen.
Finally, one of the most important things to keep in mind to talk to as many people as you can. Talk to the people in your orientation group, get to know where they are from, what they want to study, etc. because you never know- that person may end up to be your first friend in college!
And of course, remember to have fun!
