If you have been listening to mainstream pop radio at all within
the past few weeks, I am sure you have all heard the song "Am I
Wrong?" by a duo called Nico and Vinz. While the song is climbing up the
charts in popularity, the song is certainly climbing to the top of my list of
favorite songs.
The song is such a catchy tune, but I
think what I love the most about the song is its lyrics. If you know me, you
know that I love song lyrics; in fact, I still try to buy hard copies of music
albums just so I can read the liner notes (you know, the little booklet with
the song lyrics in the front of the CD case!). So once I heard this song, I had
to look up the lyrics! Here are my favorite lyrics from this song (disclaimer:
I do not own these lyrics in any way, shape or form. I have gotten the lyrics
online from azlyrics.com. I am merely discussing these lyrics as a means to
draw a correlation between the words and college):
"Am I wrong for thinking out the box from where I stay?/Am I
wrong for saying that I choose another way?/I ain't tryna do what everybody
else doing/Just cause everybody doing what they all do/If one thing I know,
I'll fall but I'll grow/I'm walking down this road of mine, this road that I
call home."
"Am I tripping for having a vision?/My prediction? I'm
a be on top of the world/ Walk your walk and don't look back/Always do what you
decide/Don't let them control your life/ That's just how I feel/Fight your fight
and don't let go/Don't let them compare you, no/Don't worry you're not
alone/That's just how I feel."
Once I saw the lyrics, it hit me: Nico and
Vinz have put to music exactly what I have been trying to say all along on this
blog. Their lyrics told me, you, and all others that it is okay to "choose
another way" and to not do what everyone else is doing. What we both acknowledge
is that it is not easy; they put it so eloquently by saying "I'll fall but
I'll grow." This is such a true statement: it is NOT easy by any means to
walk your own path when so many others around you are losing their minds and
doing as they please while they are in college. And although it may be tempting
to join in, learning to hold onto your vision and sticking to your own path
will help you to grow and become the person you are meant to become (which is
what college is all about, isn’t it?).
In the second verse, they carry my
thoughts one step further, which I LOVE! I am not sure if I have said this on
this blog before, but sometimes I feel kind of strange for knowing exactly what
I want, having a vision and a dream, and knowing exactly what I need to do to
achieve them. I know, I shouldn't feel that way, but when everyone around seems
to not really care about what they are doing (unless it involves making plans
for a Friday night!), it's easy to think, "Well, hey, they're not worried
about it, so why should I be worried?"
And in one verse, my new best friends Nico
and Vinz so beautifully wrote a version what I tell myself when I begin to
think like everyone else: for having a vision and going after it, you will get
your dreams and be on top of the world! AMEN, Nico and Vinz! Couldn't have said
it better myself! Once I tell myself this, I am fueled by a new energy, and I
am ready to walk my path with strength and dignity. I am determined to make
something of myself, get my dreams, and never look back.
Obviously, the message in their song
doesn't just apply to college, like I have just stated here. It is life advice.
And what great advice to follow. If you haven't heard this song yet, I strongly
encourage you to listen to it, because not only will it be stuck in your head,
but it will empower you beyond belief.
And Nico and Vinz, you guys are my new
favorites ;-)
Until next time,
That Singing University Girl
